The Festung Mark is one of the last reminders of the once largest Prussian fortress of Magdeburg. Where in the 19th Century soldiers were at home, 2001 Arts & Culture has moved into with its entire range. In the last phase of the development of the fortress of Magdeburg the present building 1864/65 arose as defense barracks on the northern front of the inner defense ring of the city, just in front of the medieval city wall. Previously here was located Tenaille Mark, which had, however, no longer met the new requirements. The new building should on the one hand offer a shelter for 800 soldiers and at the same time fulfill their defensive function. By the end of the First World War it remained in military use.
